Juergen Rehage studied veterinary medicine from 1979 to 1984 at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Germany, where he also completed his doctoral studies in 1986. In 1992, he was recognised as a national specialist in cattle diseases and in 1996 as a specialist in clinical laboratory medicine by the Lower Saxony Veterinary Association. He was awarded the venia legendi (Habilitation) by the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover in 1996. After a period as a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA, he became Professor of Bovine Diseases at the Clinic for Cattle at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover in 1999. He has been registered as a Diplomate of the European College of Bovine Health Management since 2003 and has been Chairman of the German Buiatric Society since 2017
